THIS POST BEARS REPEATING. FIRST PUBLISHED ON 08 FEB 2012,it is a is a sequel to JAPAN’S GOV. AND TEPCO ARE LYING AGAIN ABOUT A “COLD-SHUTDOWN” AT FUKUSHIMA NPPs At:  The post has been substantially updated and expanded.

WE TOLD YOU THEY WERE LYING THEN, AND THEY ARE LYING STILL. A former “special(nuclear)adviser” to Naoto Kan, who was prime minister during 12 Mar 2011 as the crisis started, warned that the Fukushima situation is far from resolved, and has exposed a multitude of serious nuclear problems that Japan will have to confront for years. Dr. Hiroshi Tasaka, who has a doctorate in nuclear engineering, and is now a professor at Tama University, said in an early Feb 2012 interview with The Japan Times: “I would say (the crisis) just opened Pandora’s box” of nuclear perdition.

DR. TASAKA SAW THE SECRET DOCUMENT. He recalled viewing the government’s “FUKUSHIMA DAI NO.1 – WORST CASE SCENARIO” late March 2011, When he was officially appointed “special advisor to the prime minister”.  The document detailed a hypothetical Fukushima crisis worst case scenario: 1. Eventual contamination from the plant would require the government to assist residents in the Tokyo area to evacuate if they wanted to voluntarily “migrate” based on the same evacuation protocols adopted for the 1986 Chernobyl accident. 2. The scenario assumed another hydrogen explosion would occur in the reactor #1 building, and radiation would force all of the workers at the plant to evacuate. 3. All of the pools storing hundreds of nuclear fuel assemblies would eventually lose their cooling ability, and the assemblies would melt down and breach the pools (spill on the ground, and most probably initiate an uncontrollable chain reaction of unimaginable magnitude). SCARY, ISN’T IT?

“SPENT FUEL POOLS” STILL THE BIGGEST DANGER” Acording to Dr. Hiroshi Tasaka who was one of a select group allowed to glimpse the secret “WORST CASE SCENARIO” document written up by the Japan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC). According to the scenario, the biggest risk during the meltdown crisis wasn’t the reactors themselves, but the spent fuel pools sitting atop them, particularly the one above reactor 4, which still contains about 1,500 nuclear fuel assemblies. Unlike reactors 1, 2 and 3, the No. 4 unit was “offline for regular checks” when disaster struck on 11 Mar 2011, and thus the reactor (NUKE) didn’t suffer a meltdown. But its fuel rods were in the pool outside the reactor, and the pool’s coolant water fell dangerously low. Adding to that danger, the fuel pool was (is) now directly exposed to the outside environment after a hydrogen explosion blew off the upper part of the reactor building on 15 Mar 2011. The Spent Fuel Pool now appears to be dangling over the edge of the reactor building;  Dr. Dr. Tasaka added ominously: “The potential heat from the pool was also much higher than other pools because 204 of the 1,535 assemblies were still “new ones” that had been temporarily removed from reactor 4 for regular checks”

IT’S THE POOLS – FOOLS! The Fukushima No.1 Triple meltdown has highlighted the dangers of spent fuel pools, which are outside the robust primary containment vessels of the reactors themselves. Dr. Tasaka said: “Under the current circumstances, the nation has no prospect of starting up the experimental high-level nuclear waste processing facility in Rokkasho, Aomori Prefecture, because of both technical difficulties and the sentiments of antinuclear activists: This means utilities must (continue to) store their spent fuel assemblies in cooling pools at their respective reactor sites as a “temporary measure…That situation greatly increased the danger at Fukushima No. 1 on March 11…The storage capacities of the spent fuel pools at the nation’s nuclear power plants are reaching their limits”. According to Dr. Tasaka: “The utilities’ fuel pools were about 70 % full on average in 2010, but the figure was 80 % at Fukushima No. 1. The makeshift cooling systems set up at Fukushima No. 1 to stabilize the stricken reactors and fuel pools have greatly reduced the possibility of another catastrophe; Even so, the improvised system for decontaminating the coolant water, is nevertheless generating large amounts of highly contaminated waste every day… Making matters worse, the government (OR INDUSTRY ?) doesn’t have any place to permanently store it”.

WORST CASE SCENARIO “SO SHOCKING” IT NEEDED SECRECY. The simulation was “so shocking” that top government officials decided to keep the paper secret by treating it as a “mere personal document” of JAEC Chairman Shunsuke Kondo, who compiled the simulation. The government only gave it official recognition at the end of Dec 2011 – More than 10 months after Tasaka saw the worst-case scenario paper. Dr. Tasaka is still not sure if such scary information should immediately be made public during a nuclear plant crisis; He said: “The assumed worst case was extreme and people did not need to immediately flee the Tokyo area even in March or April”, Dr. Tasaka added that, disclosing the simulation could have caused panic in the capital” Dr. Tasaka was obliged to keep secret the “worse case scenario” learned at the prime minister’s office, and did not feel in a position to decide “what information” was to be made public during the crisis.

GROUNDLESS OPTIMISM” – A SOURCE OF CONCERN Dr. Tasaka is also deeply concerned about the “groundless optimism” displayed by bureaucrats and business leaders as they rush to restart dozens of reactors that remain halted for safety checks since March 11. He said: “I understand quite well the intentions of the government, which now wants to send out a message of hope. But at this stage, all the risks should be put on the table…The nation’s nuclear regulators must carry out drastic reforms to regain the people’s trust. This is an imperative for the government if it wants to keep pushing nuclear power”.

WHAT INFORMATION SHOULD BE RELEASED TO THE PUBLIC ?. That is still an unanswered question that crosses moral, ethical, and “salvation of the many” grounds not yet broached satisfactorily by “nuclear” countries. Dr. Tasaka said he decided to start talking about the “worse-case scenario” only after Prime Minister Kan mentioned some of its highlights during an interview with the media in Sep 2011. Dr. Tasaka recently wrote in a new book, “Kantei Kara Mita Genpatsu Jiko No Shinjitu” (The Truth About the Nuclear Accident as Viewed From the Prime Minister’s Office). Dr. Tasaka now believes the media and government should lay some ground rules in advance, on what sensitive information should be made clear in a nuclear crisis. MOST PEOPLE NOW AGREE THEY HAVE THE RIGHT TO KNOW – NO MATTER HOW GRAVE THE SITUATION!

IT’S THE POOLS – FOOLS!!!  Even though this article is self-explanatory, the concerns expressed herein bear careful scrutiny, and the realization that Japan is not alone in its plight with “Toxic Nuclear waste” produced by Nukes, with nowhere to go. There are literally thousands of Nukes worldwide (mostly old ones) with “Spent Fuel Pools” serving as “Nuclear Waste Repositories; worse yet, most spent fuel pools are located on the same building, and above the Nuke itself to facilitate spent fuel removal, and re-installation by the use of remotely controlled davit/cranes. Convenient, but potentially deadly, and security wise, extremely vulnerable. Strange isn’t it ?(perhaps sheer stupidity). Reactors are designed to be strong enough to withstand an aircraft crashing into them; yet the most toxic materials(transuranics) sit under a light roof in a blue water pool; located above most reactors.  Keep in mind there are now “many years” of nuclear waste stored in that fashion all over the world – wherever Nukes exist. The Nuclear Uranium-fueled Industry has truly painted humanity into a corner.  It took the Fukushima tragedy to bring that awful truth to the attention of the world.

DR. TASAKA ALSO AVOIDED “RELEASE OF INFORMATION” RESPONSIBILITY” “He was just an advisor” THEY ALL SAY THAT! Even so, the IAEA could perform a useful function (for once) in writing proposals regarding the release of information, critical to the survival of potentially thousands of innocent victims of nuclear catastrophes; Unfortunately they, and most of the Nuclear Regulatory Agencies of the world, consider it their primary duty to hide such information to protect powerful financial interests. – Yes, here, there, and everywhere! IT IS A HELL OF A WAY TO RUN A RAILROAD!
REGRETABLY, NOTHING HAS CHANGED AT FUKUSHIMA DAI NO.1. It is still a doomsday machine awaiting an earthquake, or another hydrogen explosion, and those in authority worldwide seem in a state of denial still.  Recall the United Nations(UN) received an “Urgent request” last 02 May 2012 signed by at least 70 separate Japanese organizations to assist Japan in every possible way in dealing with the Spent Fuel Pools at Fukushima No.1.  Some are already in a critically dangerous situation; To date, there has been no pubic response by the president of the UN, himself a former Nuclear Industry executive in Japan.  What shall we read into this?  It could be he is still in collusion with the Japanese Nuclear Industry in trying to make “lemonade out of lemons” to protect powerful financial interests.  Indeed, there is a strong Public Relations (PR) thrust in Japan right now, using the world media, to restart some NPPs.  On the other hand Japanese public, and Japanese governors, have strongly opposed (successfully to date) any more Nuclear Energy in Japan;  As heretofore, the Japanese central Government, and their lackeys, continue to advocate Nuclear energy.  THE JAPANESE NUCLEAR NEWS BLACKOUT IS PROOF OF COLLUSION.  BIG MONEY MAKES FOOLS OF MANY PEOPLE.  I SUPPOSE THEY FIGURE THEY CAN GET THEIR GOLDEN PARACHUTE, AND LEAVE BEFORE OTHERS DO.  BIG MONEY CORRUPTS SO ABSOLUTELY, THAT IT EVEN DESTROYS THE BUSHIDO SPIRIT WHICH HAS FOR CENTURIES BEEN THE BACKBONE OF JAPAN. WHAT A SHAME!

COMMENT TODAY:  Recently many reports have surfaced about radioactive fallout in the Tokyo area. Followers of this blog have read about it, and now there are even clandestine reports that the Japanese Government may be looking for a place, or country(outside Japan)to evacuate (relocate, if you will) the some 40 million, or so citizens of Tokyo. We suggested that possibility/need early after the three meltdowns + became evident. At that time it must have sounded as preposterous to many Japanese. So did unconditional surrender to America in Aug 1945.  But in the final analysis(with American help) It helped Japan to become a highly industrialized nation, and a world class commercial competitor.  It is ironic that a nuclear explosion in Nagasaki during Aug 1945, caused Japan to close the door on pre-war domination ambitions, and opened the door to NPPs as a solution to their perennial energy problems. Then on 12 Mar 2011, a nuclear explosion of a different kind, closed what turned out to be a false door to Japan’s economical dominance to be achieved through NPP sales with maintenance/logistical strings attached;  Now, they cannot even give NPPs away.

09 MAY 2012

Tokyo Electric Power Co, Japan’s biggest utility, and owner of the devastated Fukushima Dai No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant, will be taken over by the government, after Japan’s trade minister approved a $12.5 billion bailout plan on 09 May 2012, in what is effectively a “nationalization plan”. We suppose TEPCO is believed to be “too big to fail” since they supply electrical power to almost 45 million people, in and around Tokyo, with a large fleet of non-nuclear utilities. TEPCO lodged a formal request for government “support” last Apr 2012, after months of dragging its feet as it sought to retain management control.

YUKIO EDANO, JAPAN’S “TRADE AND INDUSTRY” MINISTER told a news conference: “Without the state funds, (TEPCO) cannot provide a stable supply of electricity and pay for compensation and decommissioning costs…Even though the firm will be under so-called state control, I want the company to do its best to step out of this situation soon…Under the new management, I urge that the firm builds a fresh culture, listening to voices of those who have been harmed [by the nuclear crisis], to customers, to society, and starts actively releasing information.”  Finally, Mr. Edano gets the “fundamental people’s right to information” correctly. Edano added that granting approval to the utility’s “10-year turnaround plan”, paves the way for the Central government to inject 1 trillion yen ($12.5 billion) thus bringing total government support for the company to at least 3.5 trillion yen since the triple meltdowns at Fukushima last Mar 2011. The eventual cost of the nuclear disaster, including compensation and clean-up costs, has been estimated at more than $100 billion.  Fukushima Dai No.1,  is a true “Money-pit”.

TEPCO PRES. TOSHIO NISHIZAWA SEES THE BAILOUT AS TEMPORARY.  Referring to the government’s intention to own TEPCO only until it recovers. (HOPE SPRINGS ETERNAL AMONG CEO’s).  TEPCO Chairman Tsunehisa Katsumata will be replaced by a member of the bailout body, and a new president was chosen this week from within TEPCO to replace Nishizawa in June 2012.  TEPCO IS SADDLED WITH DEBT OF TRILLIONS OF YEN in compensation and clean-up costs from the Fukushima triple meltdown radiation crisis, as well as surging fossil fuel costs to compensate for lost nuclear power capacity.  TEPCO has been facing insolvency risks since the disaster.

THE  BAILOUT PLAN STIPULATES that the government will get more than half of TEPCO’s voting rights, allowing it to choose board members. It will also take convertible stock that, when converted, will increase its control to more than two-thirds, enabling it to make unilateral decisions on major management issues including mergers. Even so, the bailout and takeover must first be approved by a general shareholders’ meeting in June, as a formality; Additionally…

1. The government will inject $12.5  billion dollars, and  provide TEPCO with an additional 850 billion yen for compensation,  Major creditors will provide the firm with an additional 1 trillion yen in compensation funds.

2. TEPCO WILL SELL OR LEASE some of its thermal power plants, a move Edano suggested could be an initial step towards loosening the grip of Japan’s 10 regional monopoly utilities including TEPCO, by opening markets to competition.

3. TEPCO PLANS TO CUT COSTS by 3.3 trillion yen over 10 years, and said it aims to turn profitable in the 2013/14 business year, forecasting a net profit of 106.7 billion yen. But this goal depends on many uncertain factors.  Yeah!, we reckon as how!

4. TEPCO AIMS TO RESTART SEVEN(7) REACTORS at its Kashiwazaki Kariwa plant from 2013/14;  However, this is viewed as improbable due to mounting public opposition –  Kashiwazaki Kariwa is not an exception;  Furthermore, the government has yet to decide what role nuclear power will play in Japan’s future energy policy. They just don’t want to smell the coffee!

5. TEPCO PLANS TO RAISE ITS RATES for three(3) years for households by 10 %, and for corporate customers by about 17 %.  The household electricity rate hike, unpopular among the public, must first be approved by the government.

TEPCO President Nishizawa said:  “The only thing we can do is to try to seek the public’s understanding. If we can’t realize this, then the impact would be big on our revenues and expenditures … But we do not have a plan B or a C now,”  Many Japanese believe TEPCO downplayed the risks of earthquakes and tsunamis at its nuclear stations and covered up safety lapses. “Public understanding” (forgiveness?) after their cover-ups and news blackouts are not likely.

COMMENT:  Very large utility companies are usually managed by people who safeguard their position first, and who seem perennially optimistic – even when faced with financial disaster.  TEPCO stock is down to 10% of its value before Fukushima.  Go figure! Many people have lost most of their financial investment; still, the magnates wish us to think TEPCO’s predicament is temporary.  I do not thiink so! As soon as the re-organization is over, such TEPCO magnates will be relegated to posterity – return or no; Good riddance!  Their misdeeds and recalcitrance has hurt direly the people of Japan, and the world’s Uranium Nuclear Industry worldwide. President Nishizawa should have had a plan “B”, as in B-gone! Pronto hombre! – OH! No golden parachutes please!

05 May 2012

THOUSANDS OF JAPANESE PEOPLE MARCHED TODAY to celebrate the deactivation of the Tomari Nuclear Power Plant(NPP) on the northern island of Hokkaido. The event coincides with “Children’s Day” in Japan;  and, anti-nuclear activists say that is fitting, because they’re concerned about protecting children from radiation. Many people in Japan view the deactivation of Japan’s NPPs as a cause for celebration; Accordingly, they marched to celebrate the last of this nation’s 50 nuclear reactors which had remained active on Saturday(05 May 2012),  Celebrants were shaking banners shaped as giant fish (now a potent anti-nuclear symbol). Participants also raised banners with the slogan: “Good bye, NPP”

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 42 YEARS Japan is without electricity generated by NPPs.  “Tomari”, The last active NPP, of the country’s 50 remaining NPPs was deactivated for what’s described as mandatory routine maintenance”.  Since the Fukushima triple meltdown tragedy on 12 Mar 2011, no nuclear reactor in Japan has been restarted after being shut down for routine maintenance.

HOKAIDO ELECTRIC POWER CO. TECHNICIANS as of May 5, 2012, continue to monitor operations of their other power plants in the central power supply control center at the utility’s headquarters in Sapporo (northern Japan).  On 17 Aug  2011, the Japanese Government approved the restart of reactor No. 3 (Tomari NPP complex has three reactors) Thus; Tomari No.3 was the first Japanese NPP reactor that was permited to be placed on line again after the Fukushima triple meltdown of 12 Mar 2011;  Even so, “Tomari” NPP became Japan’s last operating commercial NPP.  The reactor is of Mitsubishu design, and generated about 912MW.

THE MAYOR OF TOMARI TOWN, IN THE FURUU DISTRICT, where the reactor was shut down, calls the deactivation: “extremely regrettable.”  Understandably, many local people want the plants back in operation because they stand to loose jobs, subsidies, and other benefits to their local economy. The Japanese Central government has warned of blackouts, and rising carbon emissions, as Japan is forced to turn to oil and gas to produce electricity, and other energy.

COMMENT: We know from other posts, that Japan’s Central government actually contemplated reactivating many idled reactors, but desisted in their efforts after most District Governor’s heeded their constituents to oppose any such initiatives, when (NIMBY) became the local cry.  We are happy to see that the governmental system of “checks and balances” appears well and working in Japan, despite their Central government’s recalcitrance, inaction, and misdeeds.

03 MAY 2012

WIKIPEDIA SAID  Only a year ago (exactly): “The 2011 World Press Freedom Day celebration is being held in Washington, D.C., USA on May 1-3. This will be the first time the United States has hosted the World Press Freedom Day celebration. The theme of this year’s event is 21st Century Media: New Frontiers, New Barriers. The event will affirm fundamental principles of media freedom in the digital age—the ability of citizens to voice their opinions and access diverse, independent information sources—20 years after the original declaration was made in Windhoek, Namibia”.

IT SOUNDS SO GOOD I WISH IT WERE TRUE! – Guess the SA-EN(San Antonio’s only newspaper) decided to celebrate the anniversary by cancelling our access to their paper. Was this decision timed to coincide with WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY? Sure it was! They have sent us a veiled message that they do not care what their readers think. The “Powers of B” have the arrogance to rub it in!  Check it out…

Notice: mySA will discontinue these forums on June 1, 2012. Thank you.

DEAR mySA FORUM MEMBERS  The terse announcement above, was made by the San Antonio Express-News (a Hearst Newspaper) on 02 May 2012.  No explanation was provided, or a reason for the discontinuation.  My posts are receiving about 40,000 views /month.  I have grown accustomed to having traditional media shun my articles, and even Google, relegate my important work to the backwaters of daily news, to give preference to people whose work does not match its degree of accurate information, conciseness, exactness, and timeliness.  It is small consolation to have my style of Journalism imitated by many of them.  Someone once said: “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery”; There is truth in that.

I HAVE OFTEN THOUGHT THE POWERS OF B” ARE BEHIND IT ALL.  They do not like to have anyone telling it like it is(my mantra).  Their problem is that the world has come to recognize that traditional media serves the very wealthy and powerful interests who pay for their adds, and advertisement, and even to avoid certain topics adverse to their financial interests;  So it is, that Blogers like me are rapidly becoming the only source of  news, and events placed in their real context, with reading between the lines to provide accurate, truthful comment, and even why events happen, or fail to happen;  Fortunately, there is a growing number of Blogers who understand this, and have decided to make a difference in people’s opinion and thinking.  I feel sorry for media news reporters, and their editors(in TV too), because they do not enjoy my freedom of expression.  Remember how even PBS soft-pedaled on their recent Fukushima report?  Their betrayal of public trust was pathetic!  However, they need funding too.

NOT TO FRET: WWW TO THE RESCUE!  For more than a year now, I have offered these same articles on my own web site.  I was surprised to find that it costs very litle to own a domain and site.  This website has been very well received worldwide, and is normally read in over 70 countries(some in the 400 reads/month range). We get reads from, Germany, England, France, Spain, and even from the Arab World currently in the decision making process regarding NPPs. The number of reads are not as precise as those in the mySA Forum, but it is clear to me, that it has been highly influential in moderating and forming public opinion, as well as useful in the decision making process of many countries regarding the down side of NPP’s.

THE FUKUSHIMA TRIPLE MELTDOWN TRAGEDY awakened the entire world (with our help) to the fact that all Nuclear Power Plants(NPPs) unavoidably create highly toxic/deadly Transuranics, now piled-up all over the world in “spent fuel pools”; Truth is: There is enough of that transuranic(toxic) crap all over the world to create an Extinction Level Event.  Hell! Fukushima alone may do that! Just read our last article about that.  With each NPP conservatively valued at $9,000 million, you bet these people are concerned, and highly defensive.  As far as they are concerned “no nuclear news or blogs” is best.  Our ignorance is needed, but…It’s “No sale”, the entire world is now aware of the misdeeds and greedy, highly corruptive ways of the NPP Industry.  Big money is highly corruptive.  Just read some of my posts, and you will see why the nuclear Cartel’s M.O. is as is, and does not flinch.  Hell, they are between the rock, and the hard place;  Specially, Nuke making/selling countries like France, Japan, Russia, and a few minor purveyors.  They wanted to Colonize the world with their exclusive nuclear energy technology, and now, can’t even give it away.

I believe we former mySA forum members have good reason to feel “let down” by Hearst Newspapers, and the only newspaper in San Antonio, TX -The SA-Express News.  They should stop and consider the effect of their actions on their readership.  Computers have opened many news portals for us all(such as they are).  WE URGENTLY NEED TO EXPLORE THEM ALL, TO FILL-IN THE INFORMATION VOID, AND DISINFORMATION/PROPAGANDA OF TRADITIONAL NEWSPAPERS AND TV.

Your Friend,

Edward Oliver Gonzalez(gonzedo)

02 May 2012

THIS IS AN URGENT REQUEST FOR UN INTERVENTION to Stabilize the Fukushima Daiichi no.1-Unit 4 Spent Nuclear Fuel Pool.  Nuclear experts from the USA and Japan such as: Arnie Gundersen, Robert Alvarez, Hiroaki Koide, Masashi Goto, and Mitsuhei Murata, a former Japanese ambassador to Switzerland, and, Akio Matsumura, a former UN diplomat, have steadily warned against the high risk of the Fukushima Daiichi  No. 1-Unit 4, Spent nuclear Fuel Pool.  Recently, former diplomats and experts both in Japan and abroad (HAVE)stressed the extremely risky condition of the Fukushima Daiichi no.1-Unit 4 spent nuclear fuel pool.  Although not in Japan, deep concern is being widely reported by world media.

WE 72 JAPANESE CIVIL ORGANIZATIONS EXPRESS OUR DEEPEST CONCERN that our government does not inform its citizens about the extent of risk of the Fukushima Daiichi Unit 4 spent nuclear fuel pool (FAILURE TO INFORM THE PUBLIC). Given the fact that collapse of this Spent Nuclear Fuel Pool could potentially lead to catastrophic consequences with global implications.  The Japanese Central Government, as a responsible member of the international community, should be doing all it can to avoid an even greater disaster by mobilizing all the wisdom, and the means available, in order to stabilize this spent nuclear fuel pool.

DAIICHI NO. 1 SPENT FUEL POOLS ARE A GLOBAL CONCERN It is clearly evident that Fukushima Daiichi Unit 4 spent nuclear fuel pool (sitting precariously atop Unit no. 4) is no longer just a Japanese issue, but a global concern with potentially serious consequences; Therefore, it is imperative for the Japanese Central government, and the international community, to work together on this crisis before it becomes too late. FURTHER: We are appealing to the UN to help Japan, and the planet in order to prevent the irreversible consequences of a catastrophe that could affect generations to come. We herewith make our urgent request to you as follows:

1. The UN should organize a “Nuclear Security Summit” to take up the crucial problem of the Fukushima Daiichi Unit 4 spent nuclear fuel pool full of deadly Transuranics.

2. The UN should establish an independent assessment team on Fukushima Daiichi Unit 4, and coordinate international assistance, in order to stabilize the unit’s spent nuclear fuel, and prevent radiological consequences with potentially catastrophic consequences.

ROBERT ALVAREZ, SENIOR SCHOLAR at the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS), who is one of the best-known experts on spent nuclear fuel, warned that in Unit 4, there is a spent nuclear fuel pool which contains Cesium-137 (Cs-137) equivalent to 10 times the amount that was released at the time of the Chernobyl nuclear accident; Thus, if an earthquake, or other event were to cause this pool to drain, this could result in a catastrophic radiological fire involving nearly 10 times the amount of Cs-137 released by the Chernobyl accident; FURTHER nearly all of the 10,893 spent fuel assemblies at the Fukushima Daiichi plant sit in cooling pools vulnerable to future earthquakes, with roughly 85 times more long-lived radioactivity than released at Chernobyl.

USA SENATOR ROY WYDEN (D-Ore.), after his visit to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant on 6 Apr 2012, issued a press release on 16 April 2012, pointing out the catastrophic risk of Fukushima Daiichi Unit 4, calling for urgent US government intervention. Sen. Wyden also sent a letter to Ichiro Fujisaki, Japan’s Ambassador to the United States, requesting Japan to accept international assistance to tackle the crisis. (NOW USA HAS TO BEG JAPAN TO ACCEPT FOREIGN HELP?)

OUR COMMENT:  ON THE ONE HAND, WE ARE PLEASED TO SEE ACTION TAKEN BY SO MANY RESPONSIBLE JAPANESE GROUPS,  But…WHAT WILL IT TAKE? To get the Japanese Central government to say “NO” to the Nuclear Cartel, and the IAEA global financial interests ?.  In plain language, what will it take to get them off their ass? , and recognize that their laissez-faire attitude will not help Japan(or the world) in its hour of need.  Indeed, Japan’s “Hour of need” is here already, and the “big hush” is still on.  Is this inscrutable Japanese philosophy, or money driven madness?  They stand to loose EVERYTHING in just a few years(if that much).  Just listen to this…

NUCLEAR PLANT EXPERT ARNIE GUNDERSEN recently reported having taken several random samples of soil in, and around Tokyo.  He sent these to an independent lab which reported: “This is nuclear waste”, and we will need to send it to Texas for disposal”.  Yes I know, it is a relatively small amount of contaminated Tokyo soil, but truth be told, we do not want their nuclear turds in Texas either (NIMBY).  JAPAN’S HOUR OF NEED IS HERE !  DENIAL OF THE PROBLEM WONT HELP.  May our creator help them, and us, if  the Fukushima spent fuel pool should topple over.  If that should happen, Japanese citizens will no longer be welcome members of the global community anywhere.  Who would want them, or have compassion  for them?  Not me!  Japan would in my opinion, become a radioactive leper colony.

23 April 2012

On 22 APRIL 2012, Iwakuni Otake Petrochemical Complex, of Mitsui chemicals, was said to have been hit by lightning, and to explode.  PROBLEM IS: The complex is still on fire, and 3379 units of radioactive waste (200L in each unit), and Uranium for nuclear fuel, are preserved on the site.  The state/condition of the uranium and radioactive waste is not reported yet. Windows were broken, several people were reported injured, and one dead.

For the story with pictures, click on link below.  It was written by someone in Japan who likes to tell it like it is. A man after my own heart

MORE BAD NEWS FOR JAPAN, AND THE URANIUM CARTEL.  The “nuclear news” blackout appears to be on still.  Let us remember what was recently said here about the “people’s right to know” – Evidently no such right in Japan! – PLEASE SEE: IRISH ANTI-NUCLEAR ACTIVIST, AND CHILDREN’S BENEFACTOR, VISITS FUKUSHIMA (25 MAR 2012)

MY COMMENT:  It was the lack of the fundamental “people’s right to know”, that got Japan into a catastrophic war against America, and its allies in WW-II.  Once again the question must be asked:  Is another radiation  “leak” in the works for Japan and the world?  The Japanese government continues to act irresponsibly toward its people, and the world community; That, is what happens when Big Money rules.  We will keep a watch on these potentially damaging developments.

13 April 2012

JAPANESE TRADE MINISTER EDANO SAID on 13 April 2012 (Friday): …Two(2) idled “Kansai Electric Power Co” Ohi No.3 and No.4 , located in the “Fukui prefecture” have been declared safe, and need to be restarted… We’ve confirmed safety and necessity for restart of the reactors, and we’re now entering into a stage to seek understanding of local communities and the public…We will visit and meet Fukui prefecture governor on 14 Apr 2012 to explain the central government’s assessments”.  Local government agreement is not required by law, but the Japanese Central government has made clear its reluctance to override wary public opinion.  Three(3) other prefecture governors have stated a position of : Not In My Back yard(NIMBY);  Accordingly, the restart is now up to the Fukui Prefecture governor.  Lookout gov!  The eyes of the world are upon you.

JAPAN’S PRIME MINISTER YOHIHIKO NODA, and two other ministers (no names given to protect the parties) agreed at a meeting, that the Ohi NPPs would be “resilient” against a severe events like the 11 Mar 2011 earthquake and tsunami, which triggered the tragic chain of events which led to the triple meltdown that wrecked the Fukushima Dai No.1 NPP about 150 miles North of Tokyo.  Apparently industrial needs /big money are driving the wagon once again.  The key word is no longer public “safety”, but rather “resilience” of the NPPs;  That, is what they said about Fukushima too.

CENTRAL GOVERNMENT APPEARS IN ACCORD TO RE-START KANSAI’S TWO NPPs. The four(4) Ministers also agreed that the restart of Ohi 3 & 4 would be necessary to avoid a sudden power shortage during the summer, when Kansai’s power supply might fall short during  peak-hour demand by 20% (according to the latest government estimate), so…

TOKYO IS TRYING TO ASSUAGE LOCAL CITIZENS, AND THEIR GOVERNORS who normally oppose any further use of of NPPs.  Currently, only one of Japan’s 55 NPPs remain in operation, and public worries over nuclear safety, has left communities reluctant to approve NPP restarts.  54 NPPs are currently “idled for routine maintenance”(for over a year now).

OSAKA’s INDUSTRIAL ENERGY NEEDS DRIVE P.M. NODA.  The region surrounding Osaka Japan (Kansai Electrical Service region), met more than 40 % of the its power need by NPPs, before Fukushima.  Problem is: Osaka, is Japan’s 2nd-biggest metropolitan area, and home to the factories of several top electronics makers, and heavy industries…and, they have threatened to leave the country with their factories elsewhere, unless they can be assured of abundant electrical energy;  TALK ABOUT A SQUEEZE PLAY! ; HENCE…

MINISTER EDANO IS BETWEEN “THE ROCK AND A HARD PLACE” regarding his stated advocacy to re-start the two idled NPP’s against clearly expressed Japanese citizenry opinion.  Since may 2011, a majority of Japanese Industrialists have advocated relocating  their respective industries outside of Japan; so, going down the slippery slope, is no doubt viewed as disastrous by Mr. Edano.

COMMENT: The Japanese press has recently conducted a massive worldwide Public Relations campaign aimed at assuaging the Japanese people of the need for nuclear energy, and the improved safety of their nuclear fleet.  Sorry, the public at large is not buying any of it.  Main concern most of us have, is the continuing tragedy and drama still being played out in slow motion at Fukushima.  The Japanese nuclear industry “peed in the bath water”, and have been trying to deny what is clearly evident: Fukushima continues to (and will do so for many years – with or without British help) pour out highly radioactive transuranic elements into the world’s air, sea and land. Yes that too will arrive soon to USA coastal waters in the form of poisoned seaweed, radioactive floatsam, worse yet, poisoned fish.  Our USDA will need a large quantity of Geiger counters to check food safety against radioactivity…Maybe cars too.

INDIFFERENCE SHOWN BY THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT to the dire global consequences of their Fukushima tragedy has led me to the belief that perhaps the best way for the world to express their disapproval, is refusing to buy Japanese products. Perhaps greatly reduced exports will open their eyes to reality. The World Uranium Cartel wants Japan to succeed by denial of the facts.  Enter the Brits who will soon be helping with the decontamination (They are world-class PR people) who will scarcely help the real problem, and love to stick their finger on everybody’s pie.

HORIZON NUCLEAR POWER – A UK JOINT-VENTURE said  on 29 Mar 2012, it will not proceed with the development of new nuclear power generation in the UK. The Joint venture was formed in 2009 between “E,ON UK and RWE npower”.  Horizon will now look for a new owner(s) to advance the work of Horizon Nuclear Power UK.  Horizon Chief Operating Officer (COO) Alan Raymant said: “We have made good progress in developing our sites, in particular our lead site at Wylfa, and a strong organization capable of delivering nuclear new build in the UK…We will now focus on consolidating the progress made and working with our shareholders as they investigate the opportunities for new ownership.”

RWE npower, part of the “RWE Group, is a leading integrated UK energy company”; They supply gas and electricity to residential and business customers, and operate and manage a portfolio of flexible low-cost coal, oil and gas-fired power stations. RWE cites a number of real economic factors, but makes no mention of the universal rejection of Uranium-fueld NPPs. caused by the “Fukushima effect”.  RWE also said the accelerated nuclear phase-out in Germany led to the German-based company to adopt a number of measures, including divestments, a capital increase, efficiency enhancements and a leaner capital expenditure budget. Volker Beckers, CEO – RWE npower said: “We remain convinced that Horizon’s development projects represent excellent sites for new nuclear power stations in the UK…It is because of the strength of support for our development work, particularly on the Island of Anglesey, that we continue to believe that nuclear power has an important role to play in the UK’s future energy mix. We are therefore looking to ensure that work on development, including grid connection, can be taken up quickly by other potential investors.”

Dr. Tony Cocker, CEO of “E.ON UK -Westinghouse” (Nuclear Power Plant purveyors)said:  “E.ON has decided to focus its investment in the UK on other strategic projects that will allow us to deliver earlier benefit for customers and our company, rather than the very long term and large investment new nuclear power calls for…The company is disappointed with the decision, but will continue with new nuclear builds…Over the next few weeks, we will engage Horizon, and its owners to determine the best direction for continuing the development of these projects, and to explore alternative investors in the company”.  A statement from the company said: “Our partners in NPD-UK and the supply base, are proud of the significant accomplishments made to date, especially the granting of “Interim Generic Design Acceptance” of the AP1000 design in Dec 2011 by the Office of Nuclear Regulation.”  E.ON said it will continue to invest in projects across the UK, and that the company’s wider UK plans will be unaffected by the decision not to advance Horizon Nuclear Power.

Horizon was developing two(2) nuclear projects involving the planning and construction of six (6) new NPPs (for a total generation of 6,oooMw by 2025); Among them are: “Wylfa” on the Isle of Anglesey. And “Oldbury” in South Gloucestershire. Horizon had an investment of more than £15bn ($23.83 billion) in the UK.  (IMAGINE THAT!;  I’LL BET MOST OF THAT MONEY WENT TO BUYING PERMITS – GREASING PALMS).

OUR COMMENT is simply Bravo! To the people of the UK for making it very evident to the ruling class that any such new nuclear ventures are strongly opposed in the UK.  THEY HAD TO LISTEN.  To all Brits: Hi-Hip, Hurray (three(3) times) – Well done!

We hope more venture capital looks at “greener pastures” –  Alternative and sustainable , green energy is possible.  Many countries have a good start already. Come on! Time is a’wastin!

ONLY REACTOR NO. 2 CAN BE EXAMINED NOW AT THE  Dai No.1 Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), and even it still has fatally high radiation levels, and much less water to cool it than officials had estimated, according to an internal examination that renews doubts about the plant’s stability. A long tool equipped with a tiny video camera, a thermometer, a dosimeter and a water gauge (an industrial endoscope) was used to probe/assess damage inside the number two(2) Reactor’s containment chamber for the second time since its meltdown on 12 Mar 2011. The data gleaned shows the damage from the disaster is so severe, that the TEPCO plant operator will have to develop special equipment and technology, to tolerate the harsh radioactive environment; worse yet, the cooling and fuel removal process is expected to last decades.

Dai No.1, REACTORS NO.1 & 3 THAT ALSO SUFFERED MELTDOWNS  are probably  in even worse shape than reactor No. 2. – the only one officials have been able to closely examine so far.   An examination with an industrial endoscope on 27 Mar 2012, detected radiation levels up to 10 times a fatal dose inside the chamber.

PLANT OPERATORS PAINT A GRIM PICTURE  Junichi Matsumoto, spokesman for the Dai No. 1 NPP said: ” (the radiation)Is extremely high…an endoscope would last only 14 hours in those conditions. When locating and removing melted fuel during the decommissioning process (COME ON!- DECOMMISSIONING WILL NEVER APPLY TO A MELTDOWN), he added, “we have to develop equipment that can tolerate high radiation…the actual water level inside the chamber was way-off the estimate, which had used data that the water temperature was about 50C, indicating the melted fuel is cooled …Actual water levels inside the chamber turned out to be unreliable, but the results do not affect the plant’s ‘cold shutdown status’ (SORRY, THAT SOUNDS LIKE DOUBLE-TALK).

PROBLEM IS: COOLING WATER LEVEL IS DANGEROUSLY LOW. The probe also found that the containment vessel of Reactor No.1 (a huge beaker-shaped container enclosing the core) had cooling water up-to only 60cm (24″) from the bottom; far below the 10 meters estimated when the government declared the plant stable in Dec 2011. The plant has continued to pump water into the reactor, and may need to do so for decades to come.

WHAT!- NO WATER AT ALL?  An investigation carried out in Jan 2012 failed to find the cooling water surface, and provided only images showing steam, unidentified parts and rusty metal surfaces scarred by exposure to radiation, heat and humidity. Finding the water level was important to help locate damaged areas where radioactive water is escaping.  It is possible radioactive water may be seeping into the Fukushima water table.

TEPCO HAD SAID EARLIER that more than half of the melted fuel had breached the core and dropped to the floor of the primary containment vessel, some of it splashing against the wall or the floor. “Particles from melted fuel” have probably sent radiation levels up to 70 sieverts/Hr, a  dangerously high level inside the container (UNCORROBORATED SUPPOSITION ON THEIR PART) – They are in denial of the possibility of a molten fuel “BLOB” now producing 70 sieverts / Hr, which far exceeds the highest level previously detected, of only 10 sieverts an hour, detected around an exhaust duct shared by the No.1 & 2 units in 2011.

A REVIEW OF THE CONDITION OF THE MELTED-DOWN REACTORS  Three (3) Dai No. 1 NPP Reactors had meltdowns;  However, number two(2) reactor is the only one that has been examined, because its containment vessel was designed with a convenient slot for endoscopic examination. The exact conditions inside reactors No.1 & 3, where hydrogen explosions damaged their buildings, are still unknown. Computer simulations have indicated that more fuel in reactor no.1 has breached the core than the other two (so it is the one in worse condition), even though radiation at reactor no. 3 remains the highest. TRANSLATION: Reactor No. 1 MIGHT BE the in the worst condition.  Reactor No. 2, is in known BAD SHAPE(no water), WHILE Reactor No. 3 emits the most radiation.  In  Reactors 1 & 3 building the high radiation levels makes them accessible to workers for only a few minutes at a time; with the workers wearing full protection.

JAPANESE CENTRAL GOVERNMENT IS NO LONGER CREDIBLE TO THE JAPANESE  They said on Dec 2011, that the reactors had been safely cooled, and the plant had been stabilized, but experts have questioned such statements as “wishful thinking public relations”.

THEN…THOSE FREQUENT RADIOACTIVE WATER LEAKS  Recently, the head of the Dai No.1 NPP said it remained vulnerable to strong aftershocks and tsunamis, and that containing contaminated water and radiation remained a challenge. Radioactive water has leaked into the ocean many times already.  Workers had found a fresh leak of 120 tons from one of the hoses at a water treatment unit this week in Mar 2012, with an estimated 80 liters escaping into the ocean, Matsumoto said. Officials are still investigating its impact.  OH! – THOSE MILES OF IMPROVISED PLASTIC COOLING WATER PIPES – THEY LEAK A LOT!  There is no way they will last 40 years, but…you know!

COMMENT: Fukushima’s accident has caused public distrust and concerns about nuclear safety worldwide, but in Japan, great public opposition has made it difficult for the government to allow the start- up of 53 NPPs.  All but one(1) of Japan’s 54 reactors are offline, with the last scheduled to stop in early May.  EVEN SO, THINGS DO NOT LOOK GOOD, DO THEY?  It is truly scary when one thinks about what another powerful earthquake or tsunami could do to Fukushima and all of us.  Something not mentioned earlier, is the grave danger posed by the “Spent fuel pool” sitting precariously atop Reactor No.4.  If all that transuranic nuclear waste should fall many meters to the ground, it could start a self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction of unimaginable consequences and with no current technology available anywhere to combat it. Hell! TEPCO is already clamoring for “improved technology” to combat the three(3) fuel loads in the reactors that melted-down. A year after, they haven’t improved a damn thing!

TEPCO NOW WANTS THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT TO ASSUME THE FULL BURDEN  of financial and remediation/abatement procedures yet to come, and for an indefinite period of time. YEAH! TEPCO wants to throw in the towel now! In the meantime, the Central government so much as says to their people ” OH! get over it! STUFF HAPPENS”, and we will soon open the “NO-GO” areas.  In my book, they are guilty of the ultimate irresponsibility, given what science knows about radioactivity. DO YOU SUPPOSE THEY WOULD GO THERE THEMSELVES?, OR SEND THEIR RELATIVES THERE?, I DO NOT!
May our Lord have mercy upon, us and forgive our trespasses.

25 MAR 2012

ADI ROCHE, IRISH ANTI-NUCLEAR ACTIVIST OF NOTE, VISITS FUKUSHIMA JAPAN, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. during a fact-finding trip an Irish supporter of children affected by the 1986 Chernobyl disaster discovered “many mirror images” between the crisis here, and Chernobyl, world’s worst nuclear accident, which still haunts people in many contaminated zones. Adi Roche (56), is CEO of the charity group(NPO ?) “Chernobyl Children International”, based in Cork, Ireland.  She offered encouragement to the people living near the stricken Fukushima No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant (NPP),  At a meeting in Koriyama, Japan in early March 2012 She said: “Chernobyl survivors want you to know that their hearts are with you…In a demonstration of solidarity…Chernobyl survivors understand the loss of community, the loss of culture, the loss of lives that you know and the loss of health and the loss of even life itself… and are shedding tears for the people of Fukushima whose lives are so dramatically altered by this terrible event.”

AWARD WINNING ANTI-NUCLEAR ACTIVIST Adi Roche established a support group for children, in what is now Ukraine on 1991.  Roche, whose group has brought more than 22,000 children from Ukraine, Belarus and western Russia to Ireland for rest and recuperation, endorsed Sato’s argument that Fukushima children under post-disaster stress need a similar program in Japan, and that efforts to protect kids from adverse effects of radiation, require public funding;  (ADI’S WORK ARE REAL DEEDS; NOT JUST TALK).

SADLY, IN KORIYAMA CHILDREN ARE TOLD NOT TO PLAY OUTSIDE for lengthy periods. An indoor playground that the municipal government opened in Dec. 2011 has drawn more than 80,000 visitors; That is how scarce approved (safe from radiation) grounds are today.

ON 11 MAR 2012, ADI ROCHE MET WITH POLITICIANS, MUNICIPAL EMPLOYEES AND CITIZENRY impacted by the Fukushima crisis. Her visit to Japan was clearly timed to coincide with the first anniversary of the 11 mar 2011 Dai No.1 triple NPP meltdowns. In Koriyama, some (60 km west of the Dai No.1 NPP), Roche shared her experience of providing medical and humanitarian assistance to Chernobyl’s (Ukraine) children with her Japanese counterpart Ms. Sachiko Sato…

MS. SACHIKO SATO (53), MOTHER OF FIVE (5) CHILDREN is a representative of the 600-member “Fukushima Network for Saving Children from Radiation”  Ms. Sato, from the Fukushima town of Kawabata (some 40 km northwest of the NPPs), said she gave up organic farming due to high levels of soil radiation she detected on her own land after the NPP triple meltdown, and sent four(4) of her five(5) children to live in neighboring Yamagata Prefecture. Hearing Sato’s account of the situation faced by Fukushima residents right after the outbreak of the crisis, Roche expressed concerns that distribution of anti-radiation iodine tablets was slow, and that conflicts arose among citizens in the prefecture because of differing levels of anxiety about radiation, resulting from lack of public information, misinformation, and even disinformation.

MS. ADI ROCHE IN TOKYO -AFTER VISITING FUKUSHIMA PREFECTURE, said: “mothers in the prefecture clamored for my attention to ask questions about the effects of radiation” on their children: those mothers share with Chernobyl survivors “fear, paralysis, depression and uncertainty about their future, a deep sense of loss and confusion as a result of misinformation or sometimes no information…In Chernobyl, I know the first casualty was truth…I know that there must be some balance in telling the truth that doesn’t panic and doesn’t immobilize the citizens, But also there must be some reality, some hard information given that must offer people choices before things go critical.” During a meeting with Mizuho Fukushima, leader of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), and a longtime nuclear opponent, Roche agreed that people who voluntarily evacuated, and those who decided to remain in the area, should both receive public support; Roche added: “people should be given the right information to make an educated decision to stay or not to stay…Information is power, and I think information gives us freedom, psychologically and emotionally,” (THERE! – SHE TACKLED THE “PUBLIC RIGHT TO KNOW” ISSUE HEAD-ON; NO ONE IN JAPAN HAS HAD THE COURAGE TO DO SO. WE CONCUR WITH HER)  See also next para. about that issue.

PEOPLE DESERVE THE WHOLE TRUTH. Having supported many Chernobyl children who suffered from diseases such as thyroid cancer and heart problems, Roche said: “inhabitants of radiation-contaminated zones should have access to information on the long-term effects of low-level radiation exposure through the food chain, because the latency period for such exposure lasts for a few decades…to address daily fears of people over radiation, it is necessary to be honest and provide the whole truth…not watered down, not monitored, not edited, not interpreted but told directly…When authorities don’t know for sure about the health risks, they should honestly say so, suggest the possibilities with data on radiation levels and give an alternative to eating potentially contaminated food as a precautionary measure…a multi-faceted approach is needed in providing information to the public, so that a mixture of people who don’t have vested interests are involved, and recipients of the information will have trust in it”.

TOKYO ELECTRIC POWER CO.(TEPCO) CRITICIZED  Roche said: TEPCO managed the news on the crisis in a manner that caused a complete lack of trust among people…TEPCO was like playing a poker game with the lives of Japanese people. They have only shown arrogance and disrespect and a complete disregard for the lives of the people,” (WE THINK SHE DOES NOT LIKE THEM ! – WE DON’T EITHER!).

We tip our hat in deep respect to Adi Roche, a courageous, intelligent, and benevolent woman, who s not afraid to “tell it like it is”.  She reflects credit on her Organization, and on Ireland. Wish our world had more persons with such inclinations.

Thanks to “The Japan Times – on Line”, 24 Mar 2012, for their excellent quotations.
